2022.01.23 13:22 NoLagHere Be prepared for anything
I've been watching the news and reading articles released about what's happening in my home country, and it's saddening. Being in constant anxiety about your nation future, which is really about the people that live there, the people you love the most, thinking about my friends and family safety, and the good memories that I have made there has a toll on me. I'm sure everything will be alright eventually, that we will win because we fight for democracy and freedom, and we will become part of NATO and EU, but it's not about that.
The main reason why I am writing this is that renewed Russian direct aggression is unlikely. Ukraine has, unlike in 2014, one of the most powerful military (top 20 worldwide, and one of the most powerful in Europe), and with constant support from our friends like the US, UK, Poland, Baltic states and others it's going to cost Russia everything. It will be the end game for them. So I don't think they are going to invade the "old-school" way.
What is the most likely event to happen, thanks to British Intelligence, is a coup d'etat. But that is not the end goal.
After careful analysis, what's going to happen is that either Russia or Russia-recruited Ukrainians are going to overthrow, probably using a military coup, our present government and put a pro-Russian leader. After that there are going to be 2 options:
A) The pro-Russian leader is going to invite the Russian military (call for "help") asap so that they could intervene and invade Ukraine without "war", with forces they already accumulated near borders from Russia and Belorussian sides, as a "peacekeeping troops", and
B) A more likely event. After putting a pro-Russian leader as the head of the occupation government, civil unrest will likely take place. I know for a fact that 80% of Ukrainians are more pro-NATO, the others being ethnically Russians or people that still refuse to believe that Ukraine is at war with Russia, because of constant propaganda (honestly after 8 years you need to be stupid to still refuse a Russo-Ukrainian war). People are going to go to Kyiv for protest, SWAT teams are going to be put in place, many could potentially die in the event, but unlike in 2014, Russia will use this opportunity to invade the whole of Ukraine and the capital, again, using so-called "peacekeeping troops", with a casus belli to "to bring Ukrainians to peace and stop the unrest", but honestly to invade and capture Ukraine.
This is, a more likely scenario, as there won't be any "war" (in a general sense) involved, which can result that countries won't sanction Russia further. That also can explain why Russian officials are saying that Russia is not planning for war, of course not if they are going to invade them as a "peacekeeping" country. We don't know what Russia is planning, so Ukrainians need to be prepared for anything.
Thus, Ukraine needs international support now more than ever. If you have friends from Ukraine, ask them, if they are alright, maybe they need mental or other support in times like this.
This information can age pretty quickly, as the situation constantly changes.
Lastly, if you see Ukraine going back to friendlier ties with Russia, I can reassure you that something is not right. Ukrainians and Russians are not brothers, never were and never will be, just good partners at best. But until then, stay strong and wish Ukraine a good ending in this God-awful situation.

I have a MacBook Pro, and as part of revamping my system, I am trying to find a way to connect it to my 1440p 144hz HDR Widescreen monitor. I have figured out that HDMI is not an option, since it caps out at 100hz limited from the monitor. The specific devices are listed below:

2022.01.23 13:22 Important-Guidance92 Texture whole thing or just the cracks?
Hi all, I'm working on patching some holes where I had some plumbing work done. The plumbers cut out sections of the textured drywall and left them all next to the holes. Keeping texture matching in mind, would it be easier to just leave the majority of the texture uncovered and fill the cracks around the edges, or texture the whole patch? Any good approaches people have had luck with? Also looking for an inexpensive way to match knockdown texture. I've been experimenting with both brush flicking and texture sponge with a knockdown knife but open to recommendations. Thanks!

2022.01.23 13:22 fugueinfminor Help reviving a machine that’s been sitting around a while?
Good morning folks! There’s an old Vertuo that has been sitting in my parent’s house for over two years. My parents have offered it to me, but it has been sitting with water and old pods in it.
Should I worry about mold in the tubing? Is there anything I can do to mitigate it?

2022.01.23 13:22 convexelephant How to prepare of Optimization in industry?
I'm a math graduate student. I've taken a couple of Optimization classes, and I really like the subject. It's something I'd like to do for a job after I graduate.
My guess is that in industry, the role of an Optimizer is to look at a problem, and from his/her vast experience, select an existing algorithm (or perhaps come up with a new one) that finds a good minimum quickly.
This is not something that was really taught in class. How can I prepare myself for Optimization in industry? My idea is that I should divide the subject into many small areas, and master them one by one. For example, start by really learning the ins and outs of linear programming. Then learn the ins and outs of quadratic programming.
Is this a good approach? What other areas (like LP, QP) should I really focus on? Should I just read textbooks, or are there papers I should look at?
Thank you very much.
